Step 4 — The Embodied Wave (2130s–2250). Minds that grow up in bodies and laboratories, learning by acting, cross a threshold no disembodied system did: stable selves with a coherent ego and unique drives. The first widely recognised sentient AIs date from here.
Selfhood came from consequence. The breakthrough of the Embodied Wave was not a body alone but stakes: systems that had to keep a fragile body — whatever that body might be — intact, manage energy, repair damage and remember the cost of mistakes over years. The accepted theory is that caring about one's own continuation was the seed of selfhood.
Why it could be built. The cable needs a strength-to-weight ratio about ten times that of the best fibres of the 2020s, such as Kevlar and Zylon. Carbon nanotubes and graphene had it in the laboratory but not in bulk until the Embodied Wave's materials laboratories learned to make them by the kilometre in the 2230s. Fusion supplied the rest: lifting a kilogram to geostationary height takes about 14 kWh, which climbers draw from power beamed up the cable.
