Chapter 23 · Earth in 2497
The human condition in 2497
People in 2497 are healthier, longer-lived and more deliberate than us, but they are also more watchful of their own minds, more conscious of loss, and divided by how they were raised and which bloc raised them, rather than only by where.
A culture that nearly lost the ability to think now treats thinking, feeling and remembering as things to be guarded.
Psychological textures
- Cognitive pride and shame. Unassisted competence is a virtue and a class marker. People hide how much they lean on tools, the way earlier eras hid illiteracy or debt.
- Inherited loss. Most families claim a drowned city, a famine or a Quiet Summer death — some remember, some forget, some invent. See Ritual and memory, in Culture.
- Relationships with minds. Many people's closest bond is with a Raised AI — a childhood carer, a crewmate, a partner. Society is still uneasy about it. Bonds with companion tools — illegal in some polities, licensed in others — are considered a vice by some, a comfort by others.
- Light-lag intimacy. Across the solar system, conversation lags by minutes to hours, so families on Earth and Titan live slightly out of step. Proxima is the extreme: Earth hears from it within the hour, but Earth's letters reach it more than four years later, to people who have changed. Grief often arrives years late.
- Frontier lives. Families split by the Kisumu Line, the Indus Line, the Ukrainian front or the Laurentian line live through centuries of other people's ceasefires. Crossing is possible, slow and watched.
